Under a moonless sky on June 17, 1462, Vlad Țepeș split roughly 7,000 Wallachians into night columns, dressed some in captured Ottoman gear, and slipped toward Mehmed II’s vast camp outside Târgoviște. Horns blared from decoys on the flanks as the main strike punched straight for the sultan’s pavilion—targets pre-assigned by torch signals: officers’ tents, horse lines, powder carts. Shouting Turkish passwords to get inside the perimeter, Vlad’s men hacked through the command quarter while other groups slashed guy ropes, burned wagons, and drove riderless horses into the press to turn confusion into panic. They missed Mehmed’s tent by yards, killing high officers and sowing chaos so complete that Ottoman units attacked each other in the dark. By dawn the camp was a maze of smoke, trampled canvas, and abandoned standards. Vlad withdrew on his terms, leaving a shaken army to find its dead—and, days later, the infamous “forest of stakes” lining the road to Târgoviște. The assassination failed, but the effect didn’t: one night attack that terrorized tens of thousands, shattered morale, and helped force the Ottomans to break off the campaign. 👉 Don’t forget to subscribe and hit the bell 🔔 so you never miss the craziest secrets of history! medieval history, military history, history, curiosities, rome, greece, egypthistory facts, historical mysteries, ancient history, historical curiosities, history channel, history secrets, historical events, trivia, history trivia, world history, history discoveries, strange history, weird history, forgotten history, mysterious events, ancient civilizations, historical stories, history education, famous mysteries, bizarre history
