In Thailand, there is aprroximately 10,000 cases of drug allergy per year. Among these, 500-700 cases has severe drug allergy requiring hospitalization which have an impact on patients and caregiver quility of life. In some cases, the reaction of drug allergy is severe leading to lost of their life. Phenobarbital is the one of the most common anticonvulsant drug used in children. It is reported to be the 3rd most common drug caused for anticonvulsant allergy. Phenobarbital allergy can be mild rashes to severe drug rashe. Research teams from Department of Pediatrics, Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital and Medical Genetics Center, Medical Life Sciences Institute, Department of Medical Sciences, Ministry of Public Health have investigated on the HLA class 1 genoptype in children who developed drug rashes from phenobarbital and those who did not have drug rashes. The result of this study maks us know what is the HLA risk for developing drug rashes from phenobarbital. We are now in process of developing a kit that can detect this HLA genotype.
