A short comparison test between Røde Stereo Videomic Pro on Sony FDR-3000X and Zoom H1n (48 kHz wav internal audio). Recorded while commuting in Helsinki. Microphones A and B are revealed in the description below. For best comparison experience please listen with good pair of headphones. Conclusions Microphone A: better capture of high and mid frequencies better wind protection (even out of the box without any additional wind protection) Microphone B: more balanced capture of low frequencies much lower noise floor * Røde Stereo Videomic Pro's higher noise floor is due to Sony's automatic gain control and has nothing to do with the microphone itself. Gain setting in Røde is set at the lowest possible level (-10 dB) because Sony does not have any audio level controls and the external audio gain is boosted excessively. This means that any external microphone on the Sony will be useless at the lowest audio volume levels without additional high quality attenuator because of the very high noise floor, or at very loud volume levels due to low clipping threshold. However, the Røde Stereo Videomic Pro itself has one real bad design flaw and that is the implementation of the Rycote shock mount. The microphone cord is coming out from the bottom of the microphone body and has very little room to play so it wouldn’t hit against the base of the shock mount. Also the shock mount itself will absorb only minor shocks before they are captured by the microphone. The real downside is that there is no option to use better third party shock mounts with this microphone. Only available better option I know of would be Rycote's own InVision shock mount which comes with very high price tag (€/$70). Microphones are A: Røde Stereo Videomic Pro B: Zoom H1n
