Marcel Dupré - Cortège et Litanie, Op. 19 No. 2 Written in 1922, the Cortège et Litanie by Marcel Dupre appeared first as an orchestral piece serving as incidental music for a play. It was then transcribed by the composer for piano before finally being arranged for the organ (solo and with orchestra). This sequence of transformations makes a curious case for how well the piece is written for the organ, making full use of colors such as the harmonic flute, clarinet, string ensembles at 16, 8, and 4 foot (!), and the full chorus with reeds. The Cortège, or "solemn procession", presents a gorgeously harmonized melody, interspersed by the tolling bell motif (played here on the Principal 8, but intended to be played on chimes), almost invoking the bell rung at the beginning of a mass signaling the end of the prelude. The next motive presented is the "Litanie", a chant-like melody that is repeated over and over again, steadily being developed in various forms before reaching a climax upon which the Cortège returns to combine with the Litanie. A full toccata figuration joyously ends the piece. Performed by Eddie Zheng at Brick Presbyterian Church, New York, NY in April 2024.
