Peace Studies is an academic subject. It draws theories and concepts from many different social science disciplines, but the main focus is to understand the causes of violent conflicts and develop strategies for reducing them. It focuses on stopping or preventing armed conflicts, but also on the deep-rooted social and political factors that push people into conflict in the first place. Peace Studies instructor John Filson illustrates peace studies using the example of Ibrahim, a local peacebuilder in the Central African Republic who works actively to engage combatants and find ways to address urgent problems without attacking civilians. (Story and images: Conciliation Resources). People, and therefore conflicts, are complex, fluid and always changing. Peace Studies, and the practice of peacebuilding on the ground, aim to reduce violence and systemic harm by changing the underlying factors that create violent conflict. Peace Studies is also built on certain values, such as self-awareness, rigorous research, and a firm clear-eyed belief that long-term lasting reductions in violence and harm are possible. The pursuit of peace brings out the best of what humans are. It calls upon people who wish to see a better world to follow that passion and get to work!
