Property Dispute Lands Man in Jail

HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. -- A property dispute between neighbors lands a Haywood County man in jail on a contempt of court charge. George Melton s fianc e, Jennifer Queen, says he's been at the local jail since last Friday for not building a retaining wall between the two properties. The arrangement was that he would build a retaining wall within a certain period of time which, was unable to be met due to financial difficulties, Queen said. However, neighbor Dorothy Fish says the dispute has been going on for nearly a decade. We've been trying to get him to do the right thing and build a wall because it s not our fault that he built this close to our land and this has eroded," Fish said. "And you can't put any animals or anything in here because they'll fall off." Queen says the legal matter is a civil case, but Melton is in jail with no bond and under a court order must stay there until he complies with building the wall. What worries Queen the most is Melton s health while locked up. She says her fianc suffers from back pain and is on strong medication. She claims the jail won't give it to him. The first thing is you can have seizures and you can have a heart attack which would absolutely affect everything about him possibly for the rest of his life," Queen said. "And then how...how will he be able to take care of his family? Fish says she is sympathetic to Melton s well-being, but her legal resolve remains. I feel for him. But it's out of my hands, Fish says. The sheriff's office contracts medical services with Transform Health Correctional Services. It says federal health laws prevent commenting on medical issues of individual inmates. But it says every inmate is assessed when they arrive, and get daily assessments whenever there is a medical concern.
