Have you ever heard of the Australian architect Bruce Rickard? In this video I compare some of Australia's (Sydney's) best-known architects in the residential space - and specifically want to bring Bruce Rickard into the discussion. I had never heard of him while at University, which I think is a failure (crime) of the university system. Or I was living under a rock - both? If you’re fascinated in architecture then you’ve definitely heard of Frank Lloyd Wright. If you’re an Australian Architecture enthusiast you’ve likely heard of Glenn Murcutt and Richard Leplastier - who are often paired together for sharing similar design values amongst the world’s best. Another Architectural legend: Harry Siedler who almost convinced Australian design to adopt Bauhaus or Harvard Modernist style for the masses, but we Aussies are a bit stubborn in our design-thinking ways. The next big name on the list is Bruce Rickard. I hear you asking, who is Bruce Rickard? The consensus amongst older generation architects is he is on par with the previously listed architects. But I bet most of you listening have never heard of him. When I ask senior architects who this is, they express admiration and knowledge of his designs. Back in the day, they would go on excursions to see his work. I then asked architects and graduates around my age and younger to discover most of us have no idea who this is – his works are not being taught at our universities. It doesn’t help that there is very little information about Bruce Richard online - especially on YouTube, where many go to for information as we are a generation of visual learners! It is almost secretive. I don’t know why that may be, but I feel I need to contribute something to this discussion. The best resource on his work I can find is the 2018 publication ‘A life in Architecture’, showcasing amazing work that you can’t really find anywhere on the internet. Please excuse the images quality that I’m going to use from this publication - I simply can’t find photography anywhere else, which shows what a great buy this book is. And no, I have not been asked to advertise the publication. Without it I wouldn’t be able to make this video demonstrating what excellent Aussie architects did not so long ago. Please let me know if this has been useful to you in the comment section. I'll happily respond to your questions and take suggestions for future videos. #Architecture #Comparison
