Description: In the early 20th century, Russian mathematician Andrey Markov pioneered one of the first methods of analyzing language statistically. Fascinated by randomness and order, he turned to Alexander Pushkin’s Eugene Onegin, a classic of Russian literature. Instead of interpreting the poetry for its beauty, Markov painstakingly counted letters and their sequences. By tracking which letters most often followed others, he created a mathematical system now known as a Markov chain. This approach allowed him to model language as a sequence of probabilities — an idea that would eventually form the foundation of modern language models, from early text generators to today’s AI systems. What began with a poet’s verses and a mathematician’s curiosity laid the groundwork for how machines can learn and mimic human language.
