Support me on Patreon: / musicforlockdown Sorry there hasn't been a video for the past couple of days; various reasons have made it logistically challenging. However, I'm planning on two today, two tomorrow and have a big project lined up for the weekend too, so all is well. For now, here is a somewhat depressing but harmonically fascinating piece from Purcell's King Arthur (this despite saying I wasn't overly fond or Purcell just the other day!) In it, the "Cold Genius" questions what power it is that has made him "rise unwillingly and slow from beds of everlasting snow." The ornamentation on the score is fascinating, and whilst nothing specific is given, it is traditionally sung in a way that shows the performer as shivering and freezing, which makes it a real technical challenge with regard to breath control. It's not for everybody, but I think it's an absolute marvel of Baroque writing... What Power Art Thou? (The Cold Song) King Arthur Z.628 H. Purcell (1659-1695)
