ORCID provide an openly accessible registry for ORCID IDs and any information connected to them, to help people disambiguate authors from each other; along with a set of standard procedures to help organisations connect researchers to their affiliations and activities. Launched in 2012, ORCID remains a not-for-profit community endeavour, governed by its members, and individual researchers retain control of all aspects of their record. The ORCID registry now includes more than 3.3 million researchers, and the community numbers 700 members from 39 countries, including national and regional consortia. Integrations are growing rapidly across all regions and sectors: Europe is the fastest-growing region, with 52% of integrations; 62% of all integrations are with research institutions and 16% with publishers. An increasing number of publishers now require ORCID IDs from corresponding authors before they accept a manuscript. Among the benefits of an ORCID ID is that it automatically updates when a new publication in which it is embedded are assigned a similarly unique digital object identifier (DOI) by CrossRef. Auto-update likewise operates when DataCite assign DOIs for datasets, both happening within a matter of hours. ORCID are working to help reward peer review of grants and manuscripts prior to submission, by encouraging publishers and funders to link IDs so that reviews are credited to reviewers’ records.
