The male Hobby brings prey (small bird) to the nest while the female was away. This was the first time I got to see him feeding the chicks ♥ He drops to the nest but both chicks are sound asleep. He has to wake them up to announce that supper has arrived! Dad then begins a long feeding and does a pretty good job! He will offer bites too big to the chicks - the oldest chick has a better time swallowing them but the youngest gets in there and gets its share too. While the youngest was grabbing a piece of prey, Dad was still hanging on to it causing the youngest to tumble over backwards! The chick gets right back up and continues to beg for food. The oldest chick does get a greater share of the prey but the youngest did get several big bites too and at the end was able to swallow a huge piece! Dad stayed with his chicks until Mom returned back to the nest. Thank you for watching! Dorset Raptor Study Group and Wildlife Windows have been working with and assisting Forestry England for over 20 years. On a voluntary basis we help monitor and survey areas of forest for nesting raptors and feed information back to Forestry England for forestry operations / planning. A focal species of our monitoring has been hobbies (Falco subbuteo). We have been watching, studying and ringing at a number of traditional sites for many years. This year (2025) we are pleased to be able to deliver a live stream from a hobby nest within the Forestry England South Forest District. This site has been used by hobbies, successive generations, for at least the last 15 years while we have been watching them. Set within a forestry, heathland and bog environment this nest will almost certainly show a different variety of prey items than other nests we have collected diet data from. Notes: This is a wild nest showing wild birds doing wild things. The main prey items will be birds and dragonflies and some bats. The only intrusion to the nest site will be to ring the chick’s when they are approx. 2 weeks old to aid our long-term studies of these birds. This will be done under license by experienced raptor workers.
