A truly epic trip, epic day, and an episode of War and Peace doing the video. This is one of the best day trips, in Wales, and from the mainland UK even. It starts at Poppit Sands, nr Cardigan, lovely little place that is the start of the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path, as well. Out through the surf, into the estuary, and even here it is superb. Hug the coast to Cemaes Head, and you will find excellent scenery, rock formations, caves, and in summer lovely greenery and wildlife. Once you turn the corner at Cemaes Head, you will realise, that you have ARRIVED. The next mile or so, has some of the most stupendous cliffs, I have yet seen in my kayak, the scale is immense, this is the highest part of the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path, and the video, hasn't really done it justice, so I included 3 photos of our Stephen, on a previous visit in Sept. '08, when I tried to photograph him, and give it a sense of scale. Seals usually abound here,as they give birth on the beaches, hereabouts that are inaccessible to humans. I first did this trip in June '07 ,and was absolutely astounded, my first attempt at finding the Witches Cauldron. Turn the next headland, and more impressive naked rock strata confronts you. This bay is Pwllygranant, and has a little waterfall in it. The height of the cliffs, diminishes from here, but still retain their amazing appearance, and are riddled with caves, we were prevented exploring, due to the swell, a calm day here, and you can lose yourself. Next stop is Ceibwr Bay, and is not the best place to land, as it's very rocky. We were very fortunate to find a bit of sand. Launching here is a real pain, weed covered boulders, and limited parking, but if you manage it, you are smack bang in the middle of some of the finest scenery in the whole of Wales. Leave here, and the Geology changes, but amazes in a different way, it is a black Coal like rock stained with lime bloom, and has some really great caves, cut throughs and channels to negotiate. Just further on is the Witches Cauldron, and is tremendously hard to find, especially as, when I, tried to find it, I did not know what to expect. If you watch this video, you will know, I thought I'd found it, until I saw some uploaded photos!!! I haven't shown all of the Witches Cauldron, as we returned the following day, from the opposite way, from Newport Sands, so it will be in the next video as well. The return trip was, a bit of a rush job, as time was of the essence, but it was spectacular. I have left out huge amounts out of our trip, due to trying to keep the video a reasonable length, and we left loads of stones unturned, so there is ample scope for return visits here, and due to the Geology of the Witches Cauldron, the difference between high water, and low water is quite notable.
