The latest releases at the Electronic Entertainment Expo

(16 Jun 2015) LEAD IN: The gaming world is in a buzz with the start of the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles. Ubisoft, EA and Microsoft kicked of the event on Monday with a host of new game titles and new technologies. STORY-LINE: Stepping into a new gaming reality. Microsoft showed off its new HoloLens, a headset that combines virtual reality with augmented reality, allowing the viewer to see holograms amid the real world. Microsoft Studios executive Saxs Persson used the headset, gestures and voice commands to play "Minecraft" via hologram on a coffee table. A special camera allowed the audience to see what he was seeing - a perfect 3-D representation of a pixelated "Minecraft" world. Persson zoomed into the scene by saying "closer" and could look through walls to see inside rooms and underground simply by moving his head inside the hologram. He could navigate by pinching his fingers and moving his arm. Beside him, Lydia Winters, brand director for "Minecraft" maker Mojang AB, played her own character in the same world using Microsoft's Surface tablet. The presentation kicked off Microsoft's presence at E3, the annual video game conference that draws thousands of bloggers, gamers and journalists from around the world. "We just have an amazing lineup of games coming this year," says Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft's Xbox division. Microsoft has also promised that hundreds of games designed for its older Xbox 360 will work on its newer Xbox One console, starting with a handful of titles this year. "I'm not sure how they going to pull that off, but I think the crowd oohed and aahed the most at," says gaming analyst Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities. Video game publisher Ubisoft unveiled the superhero-themed follow-up "South Park: The Fractured But Whole," a sequel to the role-playing game "South Park: The Stick of Truth." Another crowd pleaser was an advance look at the March release of "Tom Clancy's The Division". EA was also on hand to show its latest titles, including their first look at "Star Wars: Battlefront" gameplay with the debut. The game features several multiplayer modes as rebel forces face off against the Empire in an epic battle. EA also showed the multiplayer-focused brawler "For Honor" which pits versions of knights, samurais and Vikings against each other on battlefields. Jason VandenBerghe, EA's Creative Director, says the game offers " the opportunity to experience the adrenaline and the danger of a melee combat and visceral battlefield." Soccer legend Pele was on hand to help EA show off "FIFA 16" the latest version of the popular soccer franchise. He marvelled at how the game play mimicked real life soccer moves. "I scored a lot of goals with the beautiful bicycle kick," he says.
