Most Snowflake users I know have always thought of Snowflake as THE Data Cloud. So, when Salesforce recently announced that they were renaming their CDP product to the Salesforce Data Cloud there was a lot of questions. What exactly is a Data Cloud? Is there more than one Data Cloud because I thought Snowflake was THE Data Cloud. Is Salesforce Genie really a Data Cloud or did they just rebrand their CDP product? The answers to these questions are what I talk about in my new Youtube video. Some spoiler alerts in the video: 1. Alan Cohen gets the credit (from me) for coming up with the term and modern definition of the “Data Cloud” in his Forbes 2019 article titled "The Data Cloud" 2. Based on my research, I’ve come up with a list of 5 characteristics that I believe describe the Modern Data Cloud: Data Flexibility, Data Unification, Data Accessibility, Data Portability, and Data Extensibility 3. Snowflake built the first Data Cloud (and it was built from the ground up) with many differentiators including secure data sharing with no need to copy or replicate data in order to share it 4. Salesforce Data Cloud is built on a new architecture using #apacheiceberg which, unlike the traditional Salesforce architecture, is able to unify analytical and transactional data. It’s also possible for third parties to build applications on top of the Salesforce Data Cloud and make those apps available publicly on the Salesforce AppExchange 5. I’m interested in getting input from anyone working in the Salesforce Data Cloud today (and I’ll also be needing a few book reviewers for my upcoming O'Reilly book about the Salesforce Genie Data Cloud)
