On November 21, 2009, Steve Hall (along with his sister Tiffany) became the first hiker to document a hike into Smoke Tree Canyon in the Owlshead Mountains after it had been discovered by his friends Charlie and Scott. Smoke Tree Canyon and neighboring South Smoke Tree Canyon contain the highest concentration of Smoke Trees in Death Valley NP, as thousands of them grow there. As far as Death Valley goes, Smoke Trees are only found in this area and a few neighboring canyons. Smoke Tree Canyon has beautiful narrows and stunning decomposed granite hillsides. In December of 2024, Steve returns to Smoke Tree Canyon with friends Michelle, Gia, and Edward to do the 14 mile round-trip hike in Death Valley Discoveries Episode 16.
