Biodiversity is degrading at alarming rates around the world and people living in biodiversity-rich areas often bear the heaviest costs of its loss and of inequitable conservation efforts. Biodiversity credits – or biocredits – are emerging as a tradeable unit of biodiversity that can incentivise nature conservation and restoration. The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) partnered with EcoTrust Uganda, Credit Nature, Conserve Global and Tondwa Conservation Limited to work with communities to set up high integrity biocredit schemes. Communities living in the schemes’ area had full involvement in their design, management and implementation. Over the course of two years many lessons were around how to bring biodiversity credits to market – what worked for nature and for the communities involved and what could be done better. Sharing these lessons serves to inform future high integrity biocredit schemes, in these countries and elsewhere, to understand the risks involved and what it takes to implement a scheme, in turn strengthening the model’s impact and effectiveness. This project is funded by the UK government through the Darwin Initiative. The series of videos were produced by Here Now Films and Afro Dreams.
