The Burari case (also known as the Burari d*aths or the Burari family mystery) refers to one of India’s most shocking and puzzling incidents of mass d*ath, which took place in Burari, a neighborhood in North Delhi, in July 2018. Here’s a detailed overview 👇 🏠 What Happened On the morning of July 1, 2018, police discovered 11 members of the Chundawat family (also known as the Bhatia family) d*ad inside their home: 10 b*dies were found hanging from an iron mesh in the ceiling, arranged in a circular or semi-circular pattern. The eldest family member, 77-year-old Narayani Devi, was found strangled in another room. 👨👩👧👦 The Victims The victims included: Narayani Devi (77) Her sons: Bhuvnesh (50) and Lalit (45) Their wives and children — in total, 11 people, aged 15 to 77 years 📜 The Evidence During the investigation, police found: 11 diaries written over 11 years, mainly by Lalit, one of the sons. The entries contained ritualistic instructions, mentioning “badh tapasya” (a form of spiritual practice). The writings suggested that the family was following a spiritual path and believed they would attain salvation or meet their deceased father’s spirit through a ritual. 🧠 Theories & Investigation Not a mass suicide pact in the traditional sense: Evidence suggested the family did not intend to di* — they believed they would survive and be saved after performing the ritual. Psychological angle: Investigators concluded that Lalit, the younger son, may have suffered from shared psychosis (folie à famille) — where delusional beliefs spread among family members. Lalit reportedly began hearing his deceased father’s voice and believed he was being guided by him. No foul play: Police ruled out m*rder by an outsider; all doors were locked from inside.
