More than 1000 years ago, the great Muslim philosopher Ibn Sina (Avicenna) presented one of the most powerful philosophical arguments for the existence of God. He asked a simple but profound question: Why does anything exist at all? Ibn Sina explained that everything in the universe is a "contingent being" — something that depends on something else for its existence. If everything depends on something else, the chain of causes cannot go back infinitely.
