Facebook friends and complete strangers help an 18-year-old from Hendersonville during a time of critical need. Madison Cawthorn, who was recently nominated to the Naval Academy, is now in critical condition at a hospital in Daytona, Florida. We spoke to parents Priscilla and Roger via FaceTime today. They describe his long list of injuries, including a ruptured diaphragm and two punctured lungs. He also lost a kidney after the fiery car crash that nearly took his life. The Cawthorn's tell News 13 that friend Brad Ledford was behind the wheel during the accident when he lost control and hit a concrete pylon. "If it wasn't for him, Madison would have died because the car was on fire," Roger Cawthorn tells News 13. "The driver had to break out a window. He wasn't scared, he didn't run from the fire. He pulled Madison out of the car because he was unconscious." The car ended up in flames. Madison needed spine surgery. "They said they wanted to do that as soon as he got here, but they said they couldn't. Your son was dying when he came here," Priscilla recalls. Friends and complete strangers began praying for a miracle. The "Prayers For Madison 2014" Facebook page has more than 3,000 "likes". On top of that, there have been prayer services at churches, including Biltmore Baptist. "To answer my prayers, he spoke," Roger says about the major breakthrough Sunday. So many people are there by his side in the hospital.
