The Battle of the Trees — A Welsh Legend (from the Book of Taliesin) Long ago, in the ancient land of Wales, there was a great battle. But it was not fought by men, nor by beasts. This was Cad Goddeu — The Battle of the Trees. The wise magician Gwydion, master of enchantment, sought to protect his people from the terrible army of Arawn, Lord of Annwn, the Underworld. But Arawn's forces were many and strong. Gwydion knew that strength alone could not win this fight. Instead, he called upon the oldest allies of the land — the trees, the guardians of nature. With his ancient song, he called their names aloud, for to name is to give power. And from the valleys and hills, the trees awoke. The mighty Oak stood first, tall and proud. He spoke: “Am I not the tree of strength? Derwen ydw i — the Oak am I.” The Alder rose from the riverbank, fierce and determined. He said: “The front line of battle is mine. Gwernen ydw i — the Alder am I.” The Birch shimmered in the wind. She whispered: “I am the lady of beginnings. Bedwen ydw i — the Birch am I.” The Willow swayed by the stream. She murmured: “Though I weep, I endure. Helyg ydw i — the Willow am I.” Even the ancient Yew, silent and dark, stepped forward. He whispered: “I hold the secret of life and death. Ywen ydw i — the Yew am I.” Then came others: The Ash, strong and flexible: “I bend, but do not break.” The Hazel, wise and sacred: “I am the keeper of knowledge.” The Holly, sharp and protective: “My leaves guard the path.” The Rowan, with her red berries glowing: “I shield against enchantments.” The Reed from the marshes, tall and slender: “Though slender, I sing in the wind.” The Bramble, fierce though small: “I defend with thorns.” The Aspen, whose leaves quiver: “I tremble but I stand.” Together, the trees marched like an army, roots deep in the earth, branches like arms reaching to the sky. The ground trembled beneath their power. The wind carried Gwydion's chant as he named each tree — strengthening them with every word. The enemy was confused and frightened — for how can one fight against the forest itself? The battle raged until Arawn saw he could not overcome the living woods. His army fled into the shadows of Annwn. The trees returned to their quiet watch over Wales. Gwydion had saved his people — not with swords or soldiers, but with the wisdom of nature, the power of names, and the magic of the trees. Even today, the forests of Wales whisper their songs: “Cofia ni — Remember us.”
