Subhashree Beeman Reads Tamil Prabha

Subhashree Beeman reads from her translation of author, screenplay writer, and activist Tamil Prabha's debut novel, Paettai (English title 'Ghetto'), which takes its inspiration from a tragedy in Tamil's own life and, as Subhashree explains in her introduction, is set in the "historically significant Chintadripet, a ghetto in the South Indian city of Chennai," which was "founded in 1735 by the British when India was their colony, to meet the growing demands of cotton." Paettai unfolds "over a period of two generations" and "traces the changes that this neighborhood has undergone, from a thriving center to the present-day slum." About the Translator: Subhashree Beeman (she/her) has an MA in Translation from The Open University, UK. She works from Tamil, French, and Spanish to English and has been a commercial translator for 10 years. She is an emerging literary translator whose works have appeared in The White Review (No.26) and Prop(r)ose online magazine. The sample translation of the novel ‘Ghetto’ has been well-received by Indian publishers. Subhashree can be found online on Instagram at at   / subhashree_translator   and on Twitter at @subhashree_b About the Author: Tamil Prabha (he/him), the author of Paettai (translated as Ghetto), is a screenplay writer to Tamil movies and an ex-journalist.
