Is the Blade of Mercy good? Yes. Is the Blade of Mercy viable in the beginning? Yes. The Blade of Mercy is a very straight forward weapon to obtain. All you need to do is defeat Eileen the Crow at the start of the game. She puts up a good fight but is easily cheesed by luring her around the platforms near where she is stationed, and most of the time she simply falls down and suffers a massive amount of fall damage. The biggest challenge is farming the 40k Blood Echoes in order to be able to purchase the Blade of Mercy from the vendor in the Hunter's Dream. As for my progression, it was fairly natural and I never stopped to farm Blood Echoes. What you see in the video is the exact order in which I defeated the Bosses when recording. In terms of blood gemstones, the only ones I used were the ones found as you progress through the story, not chalice dungeons.
