(16 Sep 2010) HEADLINE: NYC to try banning smoking in parks, beaches CAPTION: New York City is pursuing a tough new policy that would shoo smokers out of public parks, beaches and even the heart of Times Square, one of the most ambitious outdoor anti-tobacco efforts in the nation. (Sept. 16) New York City's already tight smoking restrictions are likely to get tighter. It would become illegal to smoke on the city's 14 miles of beaches -- or in its 29-thousand acres of parks -- or on the pedestrian malls that have popped up around town -- under a bill introduced Thursday in the City Council. SOT Christine Quinn, Council speaker ``We are focused on making sure that beaches and parks in New York City are smoke-free.'' It's already illegal to smoke in restaurants and bars. And it's common to see office workers taking their cigarette breaks out on the sidewalk. That would remain legal. But smokers might want to watch their step. STANDUP WARREN LEVINSON, The Associated Press The new law would set up some sharp boundaries. So if you were smoking here on the sidewalk in Herald Square, that would be legal. But if you stepped off the curb, into the pedestrian plaza -- that could get you fined. New York smokers are used to restrictions. So even among smokers, it was hard to find much opposition. SOT CHERYL GUZMAN, smoker ``I think it's a good idea. I'm a smoker myself and I'm here saying it's a good idea. They ban it in certain areas, it'll push people to stop smoking.'' Nor is this likely to be the last bit of law aimed at smoking. SOT CHRISTINE QUINN ``What I can say is that it is the last anti-smoking piece of legislation that is being introduced today.'' The new restrictions face hearings in the Council before becoming law.
