Monkichi, often identified as Mankichi Shinshi, is a Japanese street and documentary photographer born in 1984. He began his photographic journey around 2013 as a self-taught artist, developing a distinctive style that blends minimalism, stark black-and-white contrasts, and a sensitive eye for urban solitude. His work often captures Tokyo’s architecture, light, shadow, and fleeting human moments, transforming ordinary cityscapes into meditative visual stories. Guided by intuition, he describes his process as photographing whenever he feels “something” compelling him to press the shutter, later shaping these fragments into coherent projects. Over the years, Monkichi’s images have been widely recognized and published in platforms like LensCulture, iGNANT, and the Leica Camera Blog, while also earning him awards at prestigious international competitions such as the Alghero Street Photography Awards and the LensCulture Street Photography Awards. His photographs stand out for their quiet intensity and ability to affirm both the rhythm of urban life and his own existence within it.
