GODZILLA (1998) MOVIE REACTION - WHAT...IS THIS? - First Time Watching - Review

Welcome to our first-time watching Godzilla (1998). This movie was definitely not what we expected. Directed by Roland Emmerich this film had plenty of destruction but the writing felt a little flat. Starring Matthew Broderick as Dr. Niko "Nick" Tatopoulos, Jean Reno as Philippe Roaché, Maria Pitillo as Audrey Timmonds and Hank Azaria as Victor "Animal" Palotti this film has some pretty good acting talent but even they can't manage to save this script no more than the military can save New York City in this movie. "Godzilla" (1998) reimagines the classic kaiju in a modern setting, as the gigantic lizard terrorizes the city, leaving destruction in its wake. There are some good elements in this film however. The first act and how they build up the mystery as to what Godzilla is and where it's going is pretty entertaining. The sound design of the creatures gave them personality and felt terrifying, the set design and how they blended the sets with on location shots and some of the action sequences (the ones that make a bit more sense) are actually engaging for the most part.
