Remembering Django (Improvisation no7) for solo guitar by Brian Wright played by Stathis Skandalidis. Brian Wright wrote "Remembering Django" after Stathis Skandalidis had suggested that he would be interested in performing music connected with the great gipsy guitarist.( NB.He has also recorded a transcription of Django's "Improvisation No1). This was a labour of love for Brian Wright as he had been captivated by Django's playing since the age of 15. Further, he had heard Django's brother Joseph perform in North London at a pub called the "Fishmongers Arms", in Wood Green, this was around 1959-1960. Brian Wright met and spoke with Joseph Reinhardt (in poor schoolboy french). Joseph was the guest soloist with the Alex Welsh Dixieland Band. There was also another connection to Django, when Brian Wright performed with Stephane Grapelli in Brest, France, this was in 1982-3. The piece is based on the opening notes of Django's "Oriental Shuffle", the music which he had recorded with the Hot Club Quintet in the 1930's. There is no trace of Django's language in Remembering Django, rather, Brian Wright has tried to emulate Django's very lyrical melodic style. Django recorded a number of pieces for solo guitar, often in the form of Improvisations,(probally 6 in all) and so Brian Wright has subtitled his piece as Improvisation No7, in hommage to the French master.
