For all California communities, road repair is critically needed - our public infrastructure is aging and requires restoration. But fixing roads, sewers and sidewalks is loud, dirty, and extremely disruptive to everyday life for residents, businesses, and visitors. In 2016, after years of planning, budgeting and engineering, the City of Mill Valley began the Miller Avenue Streetscape Project, a complete overhaul of 1.8 miles of one of our town’s two primary arteries and the home of a high school, daycares, senior facilities, over 150 businesses and a residential district. We asked ourselves: • How do we keep community members informed ahead of and during the project, especially groups such as seniors, youth, business owners, transit users, cyclists and pedestrians? • How do we facilitate problem solving with the community throughout the project, to promote community involvement and build public trust? To address these challenges, the City developed the Miller Avenue Streetscape Project Communications Program. The primary function of the program was to inform the community of construction plans, anticipated impacts, mitigation plans, parking information, safety advisories and traffic alerts. The secondary function was to facilitate two-way communication: to receive input, suggestions, complaints and questions and to provide timely responses. The program was designed to help staff monitor areas of interest and concern and to anticipate questions and impacts to the community, and to proactively provide information and solutions.
