Saint Isaac the Syrian, also known as Isaac of Nineveh, Abba Isaac, or Isaac Syrus, was a 7th-century Syriac Christian bishop, theologian, and hermit born around 613 in Beth Qatraye, a region in Eastern Arabia encompassing parts of modern-day southeastern Mesopotamia and northeastern Arabian Peninsula. He was ordained bishop of Nineveh, a position he held for only five months before requesting to abdicate due to his ascetic nature and preference for solitude. He then retreated to the wilderness of Mount Matout, a refuge for anchorites, where he lived in isolation, subsisting on minimal food and devoting himself to prayer and study, eventually becoming nearly blind from his intense scriptural study. He spent his final years at the monastery of Rabban Shabur near Shushtar in present-day Iran, where he died around 700.
