This is an excerpt from the premiere on the 12th of October 2025 of the first movement of my new work "Piano Trio No.1", which won the main prize of the SONARLOFT Berlin Composition Prize 2025. Thank you so much to the excellent performers: Konstantin Manaev (cello), Philipp Scheucher (piano), and Wojciech Garbowski (violin). This excerpt was recorded from my phone, however I think the quality sounds quite nice still, since the venue had great acoustics. We're in the process of determining the future of this work, however it seems like the piece will be performed again soon and professionally recorded, so look stay tuned for that! The excerpt is from the last half of the first movement. The movement follows a quite classical ABA structure, with the B-section being rather rhapsodic in character, culminating in a piano cadenza. This excerpt spans the second half of the cadenza, the reprise and the coda. Program Notes: "This piece comes in two movements, which are very loosely modelled after the second and third movement of Mendelssohn's Piano Trio No. 2 in C minor. Like in the second movement of Mendelssohn's trio, the first movement of this piece starts with a gentle piano solo in 9/8 time, but after this initial almost neo-classical exposition, the music quickly runs off into new directions, showcasing both a rhythmic pop/jazz influence and an almost mystic piano cadenza before returning to a reprise in classical fashion, ending with a surprisingly dark and complex coda. The second movement (modelled after Mendelssohn's third movement) was initially thought of as a scherzo, but quickly turned into what is essentially a toccata with minimalist characteristics. Energetically, the music zips from one section to section in a kind of rondo form before suddenly decaying into nothingness, leaving space for a timid restatement of the theme from the exposition of the first movement, after which the music briefly picks up its energy again, though this time only temporarily before facing its inevitable death."
