Hi! Welcome back to Deaf Talks News. In Part 1, we saw Qatar was a poor desert nation. In Part 2, we learned how natural gas made them rich. Now in Part 3, you learn how one family stayed in power for more than 200 years and controlled western countries. Let’s learn. The Al Thani family came to power in the mid-1800s. Their ancestor, Sheikh Mohammed bin Thani, became ruler in 1868 with British support. Until 1995, the AI Thani family didn't have any fight among them. That time Khalifa Al Thani was in that power. In 1995 his own son, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, overthrew his father from power without fighting or war. He took all the support and asked his father to step down. Unlike other countries with civil wars, Qatar kept it peaceful inside the family. Sheikh Hamad, ruler from 1995 to 2013, he changed modernized Qatar. All the gas profits he Invested in education, health, infrastructure. He created Al Jazeera, a powerful news network internationally. Started investing billions of money in real estate. For example, the Qatari royal family owns more of London than even the British royal family! He bought worlds best Barclays Bank, Harrods, Empire State Building shares, and more. Also he owns sports, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) football club. Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani believed sharing his profits with everyone keeps them more power. For example : they get more profits from Gas, those money have been invested in purchasing land, banks and sports. That revenue is supported by free education, medicine and government jobs. So people are not protesting against them. In 2013, Hamad handed power to his son Tamim — youngest leader in the Arab world. During 2017, the countries like Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt suddenly cut all ties with Qatar. They closed their borders, airspace, and sea routes. No food, milk and anything.
