Fifty-five bucks each. In an era where a carton of eggs is pushing $6+ and your average cask strength Worthy Park or TDL or Foursquare of modest (tropical) age is now well over a hundo, these two Spiribam picks from St. Lucia Distillers just hit the shelves at Binny's here in Illinois for $54.99 a pop and that isn't even a sale. Even by relatively-reasonable Chairman's Reserve standards it's an insane price, and that's before we get to one of them being 100% pot still and the other coming out of a port cask. There has to be a story behind this - distributor closeout? maybe Spiribam just picked rotten barrels? - but whatever the case, today we're going to at least learn what matters. Because I've bought both of them. Stats: Chairman's Reserve 2006 16 Year Old Saint Lucia Rum, Port Wine Cask No. 0017032019 for Spiribam (Saint Lucia Distillers; molasses distilled in coffey column still, aged 13 years in ex-bourbon and 3 years in port, 294 bottles; 60.8% ABV), 85/100 Chairman's Reserve 2011 12 Year Old Saint Lucia Rum, Ex-Bourbon Cask No. 0773092008 (Saint Lucia Distillers; molasses distilled in John Dore 2 pot still, 186 bottles; 62.9%% ABV), 88/100 The port cask coffey still one is initially a little shaky on the palate, but cleans itself up nicely with water (and, I suspect, in a cocktail). Belize and Trinidad fans should come on over, and port cask fans too. It's not really my style to be honest, but for the price I'm happy to have it around for whenever I need a really strong Cuba Libre with a touch of strawberry. On the other hand, the John Dore 2 is a total no-brainer. The finish isn't as good as the various older Vendome still CRs I've tasted (see • St. Lucia Chairman's Reserve Pick Rou... for example), but amazingly it's almost as grungy and industrial. Highly recommended; for the price you can dump all of this into baller Mai Tais and not even feel bad about it.
