Soldiers accused of gang raping Palestinian detainee call for “justice”

Wearing face masks, a group of soldiers accused of sexually assaulting a Palestinian detainee held a press conference on Sunday, saying they “will keep fighting for justice” for themselves. “You did not let us respond, you did not let us explain. You put us on trial in front of the cameras as if you had already decided who was guilty. But know this: we will not be silent. We will keep fighting for justice, for ourselves,” said one of the soldiers. Israel’s former top military lawyer has been accused of leaking the a surveillance video from the notorious Sde Teiman which apparently showed the soldiers gang raping a Palestinian detainee. The scandal has received widespread coverage in Israel, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday calling for an independent investigation into the leak. Meanwhile, out of the nine soldiers who were questioned over the assault, only five were indicted for “severe abuse” of the detainee, but not for rape. Support stories that matter.
