Pre-revolutionary Russia in photographs Nikolaev around 1900 Nikolaev, or Mykolaiv is a city in southern Ukraine and reputed to be the main ship building centre on the Balck Sea. When this album was made, the city was part of the Russian Empire. The city's origin was made possible by the conquests of the Second Russo-Turkish War. Founded by Prince Grigory Potemkin, in 1789, Nikolaev was the last of the many cities he established. He created shipyards and named the city after Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of seafarers. By the 19th century the port city was ranked third in the Russian Empire, after St. Petersburg and Odessa. Music: Two pieces for violin and piano from "Kaleidoscope" by Cezar Cui
