1978 FORD FALCON XC Utility. The Ford Falcon (XC) is a full-size car that was produced by Ford Australia from 1976 to 1979. It was the third and last iteration of the third generation of this Australian-made model and also included the Ford Fairmont (XC)—the luxury-oriented version of the Falcon. In July 1976, Ford introduced the XC Falcon, a facelift of the XB Falcon, itself an upgrade of the XA Falcon. The XC was the first model to comply with the new pollution regulations specified under Australian Design Rule 27A. The response to the 1st of July 1976, mandatory anti-pollution laws, was to locally produce Cleveland V8s and redevelop the Falcon six cylinder engines with a cross-flow head(also called the X-flow) six-cylinder for greater efficiency. Versions of this engine were produced in North America and, in various guises, used in Australian Falcons through to the XF. Its long stroke and large capacity made for very good 'towing' torque, while its thick castings and relatively loose tolerances gave it a reputation for reliability in spite of abuse. The XC also introduced the country's first locally produced family sedans with a suspension designed around radial-ply tires. Known as "Touring Suspension" (or 'Sports Handling Suspension'), it initially was standard on the Fairmont GXL sedan (optional on other sedans) until it was made standard equipment on all sedans and hardtops in the 1978 'XC½' facelift. For better handling on station wagons, owners could order the stiffer heavy duty suspension package as a no-cost option. Visually, the XC Falcon was given a restyle treatment. The XC had an less aggressive nose which incorporated two round headlights on Falcon models and two rectangular headlights on Fairmont models. Ford also addressed the vision problems of the XA and XB by going to great expense and redesigning the rear door windows with a lower sill cut and installing an all-new dash, air extraction vents in the rear of the C-pillars, very large bumpers front and rear with no additional valance panel under them and installing higher front seats. It was the last model Falcon to use coke bottle styling and was replaced with the XD Falcon in 1979. Total production of the XC range reached 171,082 vehicles prior to the replacement of the XC by the XD Falcon in March 1979.
