On 6 June 1944 (commonly referred to as D-Day), Allied forces undertook the largest amphipods operation in history that began the liberation of Nazi German occupied Western Europe. Operation Overlord was the codename given to the overall combined land, sea and air operation to deployed some 160,000 troops across the English Channel to land on Normandy. An unknown number of Irish born living throughout the United Kingdom, British Commonwealth, and the United States severed in the Allied forces at the time. While Ireland/Éire was officially neutral, several thousand left Ireland during the Emergency years to serve in the ranks of the Allied forces. For many the story of the Irish at D-Day is unknown. Through living history display, talks and demonstrations, the re-enactors of the World War 2 Club brought to life the story of the Irish at D-Day at a public education event at the Irish National War Memorial Gardens on Saturday 8 June, About The WW2 club: "Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it." This quote highlights the importance of remembering World War II and the sacrifices made by those who fought in it, and our work through living history displays and educational talks serve as a reminder of the consequences of conflict and the importance of preserving peace.
