Listen to Debussy's wonderful composition Gardens in the Rain" or Jardins sous la pluie. It's the third piece in his suite "Estampes," written in 1903. Comments from the pianist Duane Hulbert: "Note that every time Debussy changes key, he changes the mood. The work starts in E minor, which might be a light sprinkle of rain at a pianissimo dynamic, followed by an increase to forte (0:37) where perhaps a little wind picks up, intensified by some augmented harmonies. Suddenly, (0:42) the wind abates and a gentle sprinkle at the pianissimo begins. It doesn't lasts long, though when a subito gale force wind is heard in F# minor. Gusts of wind intensify in C minor (1:07). At (1:19), the wind calms down to a gentle breeze in D-flat major. Yet another wind picks up (1:29), with swells of crescendos marked Animez et augmentez peu a peu (animated and increasing little by little). The storm abates somewhat and the blue skies return in the new key of C# major (1:57). But wait! (2:39) Another storm is brewing. The intensity builds up to a climax (3:02), where torrents of water fall from the sky with cascading diminished chords. As the storm moves away, a distant low rumbling of thunder is heard (3:07). Finally, a bright ray of sunshine (marked 'éclatant' meaning brilliant, radiant, dazzling) appears (3:15). The music joyfully sweeps toward a spectacular ending in the bright and sunny key of E major."
