Last week I read Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus to a first grade class for Read Across America. And the kids EXPLODED. They connected the pigeon's frustration to their own lives. "My mom won't let me do stuff either!" "One time I really wanted..." They weren't just listening - they were making sense of the story through their own experience. I wasn't reading TO them. I was reading WITH them. That's the difference lots of parents miss. When you read WITH your kid - not just TO them - you're building perspective-taking ("How do you think the pigeon feels?"). You're teaching them to USE language, not just hear it. You're putting stories into context with their lives. Connection, curiosity, confidence - all three are built in those conversations around the book. But here's what's happening: reading is becoming screen time. A survey from England found 1/3 of kids entering preschool don't know how to handle a book. They swipe at pages like phones. E-books, apps, tablets. We think we're doing the important thing: teaching them to read. But we lose these important conversations and interactions when we swap a real book for a screen. Research shows that these interactions happen less - even when you're sitting together. And maybe that's why some of the parents in this survey said their kids don't enjoy books. A screen gives them input. YOU give them context. And context is how kids learn to think. In a world where data and information are cheap, thinking is the real skill our kids need. This week: when you read together, make it interactive. Stop on a page. Ask questions. Let them tell you their stories… and share your own. Do all the things you saw those first graders do with me. (Even if it's on a screen - stay interactive. Look at each other. Point. Ask. Use the funny voices.) Because you reading with them?
