SNP colleagues are afraid to speak out on gender reform laws, says Joanna Cherry

Joanna Cherry has said fellow SNP representatives in Westminster and Holyrood are “scared to speak out” on gender reform. The Edinburgh South West MP has been a fierce critic of the Scottish Government’s legislation which will make it easier to obtain a gender recognition certificate on the basis of self-declaration and removing the need for a gender dysphoria diagnosis. Ms Cherry said she was sacked from the justice and home affairs spokeswoman role in Westminster following her opposition to the proposals which are going through stage three of debate in the Scottish Parliament. Speaking to the PA news agency following a For Women Scotland protest against self-ID outside Holyrood, Ms Cherry said she was aware of colleagues who had “serious reservations” about the legislation. Hundreds of protesters gathered in Edinburgh on Wednesday to voice their opposition to the Bill.
