Driving from Tamarindo to Nosara via Route 160 (April 2021)

July 2025 UPDATE: There is no longer a need to cross a river from Nosara to Ostional. There is a brand new bridge. There is also a bridge from Ostional out to Route 160 north. How the road is to Nosara? Do you need a 4x4 for Nosara? In this video, we will show you what the road is like from Tamarindo to Nosara via Route 160. This video was taken mid-April. In this video we're going to hopefully answer a very common question that we get and that is how is the road to Nosara. So we're going to show you the drive from Tamarindo to Nosara, what the road is like and some places you can stop along the way so let's go. We started this video by departing from Tamarindo beach and we turned right towards Villareal onto Route 152 continuing on this road towards 27 de Abril. You can also go through Pinilla and Avellanas if you want to drive more along the coast but in this case, we went to 27 de Abril first and then turned onto Route 160. After passing through a couple small towns, we turned left, leaving the paved road. From this point and on, it was a gravel, unpaved road the rest of the way, still on the Route 160. You will see a lot of signs at this turn and a bus stop outside. For this part of the road, we recommend to drive with the windows up because as you can see, it gets very dusty and there are some big construction trucks that use this route. Also since you will be driving through farming areas, you may see some animals like goats, cows or horses on the side of the road. One stop along this route if you want to get snacks, drinks or food is at Marbella. There are a couple of convenience stores and local restaurants in the town. Another stop we highly recommend is San Juanillo. This is a beautiful white sand beach that is right along the way and definitely worth a stop. I'll leave our guide to San Juanillo beach in the description below. Then the next town you'll pass through is Ostional. This is the last river before you reach Ostional so right now we are almost in the middle of April so this river is not very full as you can see. And hey do have a bridge on tha side where light vehicles can cross but we have definitely seen this river in the peak of rainy season when it is really big. So you can use the bridge on the left hand side to cross, this car in particular is a 5 passenger SUV and crossed fine. Or if the river is low, you can drive through it if you're careful and have experience with this kind of driving. We cross it in our car as it was not very deep but let me put a clip of one of our visits when the river was very full, in October which is the rainiest month in Costa Rica. At that time, the bridge was under repair and we couldn't cross the river in our car, in fact we had to park our car and walk the rest of the way to Ostional but as you can see, one of the locals crossed in their truck but the river was really full. This isn't how the river is in normal conditions, but this is how full it can get in the peak of rainy season. You can also stop in Ostional to get food or use the bathroom. And if you're visiting Nosara in the months of May - January, we highly recommend to take a turtle tour in Ostional Wildlife Refuge. Now there is one more river to cross from Ostional to Nosara and you need to be very careful with this one. Even though it was mid-April when we took this video, right at the end of dry season, after a few days of rain, the river already had some water in it so you need to be very careful if you cross this river. And now you can really see why it is required to have a 4x4 to get to Nosara. After this river, you'll be in Nosara shortly after and from Nosara downtown, you can head to your final destination like Guiones or Pelada. We have made it to NOsara and behind me is a beach called Guiones. I hope you guys found the video useful on the road from Tamarindo to NOsara and vice versa via Route 160.
