The Snap In-Circuit Debugger/Programmer is CHEAP. And by cheap I don’t mean that it’s lacking much of anything, except cost. This bad boy will only set you back $14.95. The MPLAB Snap is designed for fast debug and programming of PIC, dsPIC, AVR, SAM, and other flash-based MCUs using Microchip’s MPLAB X IDE – but despite its low cost, it delivers essentially the same speed, debug performance, and complex break-point functionality of higher end solutions like Microchip’s PICKit 4. In fact, it is even codebase-compatible with the PICKit 4 and MPLAB ICD 4 debuggers, making it easy to integrate with your existing development infrastructure. The on-board 32-bit SAME70 MCU, which clocks in at 300 MHz, allows it to deliver comparable functionality to those debug solutions. You connect directly to a target using an 8-pin SIL connector. This connector not only supports debugging targets with 2-wire JTAG as well as in-circuit serial programming (ICSP), but more advanced interfaces like 4-wire JTAG and Serial Wire Debug (SWD). The ICD supports a wide target voltage range of 1.2 V to 5.5 V. As mentioned, you can get the MPLAB Snap from Microchip Direct or authorized distributors for $14.95, but there’s currently a 50 percent discount to bump that down even further (use code TP1989 on Microchip Direct between now and December 31st). And if you’re interested in that, you may also want to check out the 25 percent discount on Microchip’s MPLAB Code Coverage tool (Code EOY2019DT valid until December 31st).
