Following a fourth-place finish at the Southwestern Conference Meet and a third-place finish at the Normal West Sectional, the stars aligned for the Edwardsville girls track and field team at the Class 3A state meet in 2012. The Tigers earned the program’s first – and only – state championship, edging out SWC rival Belleville West for the win at O’Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. For the girls track and field team, the Tigers hit the jackpot in Mikayla Thompkins’ first season as coach. Despite coming up short at the SWC Meet and Normal West Sectional, Edwardsville put it all together when it needed to at the state meet. EHS finished the day with 51 points, just beating out Belleville West’s 48.5 points and Evanston’s 47 points. It was the first state trophy won by the Tigers, who would go on to finish second in 2013. Of the 51 points scored by the Tigers, more than half came from the throwing duo of Emmonnie Henderson and A’aliyah Covington. Henderson won state championships in the discus and the shot put, while Covington placed fourth in the shot put and sixth in the discus. Together, they totaled 28 points. The Tigers received state medalist performances from three other athletes, including sophomore Kristen Dowell. She finished third in the 300-meter hurdles and sixth in the 100-meter hurdles. Junior Lauren White was sixth in the 300 hurdles. The last points of the day for EHS came from Deborrah Blackburn, who finished fourth in the high jump. Henderson and White are already in the Edwardsville Athletic Hall of Fame as individuals and members of the 2011-12 girls basketball team. Coach Marquez’s assistants included Andrew Thierry, Deserea Howard, and Ben Bishop.
