Cherished number plates - or ‘private plates' as they’re sometimes called - are not the preserve of the fabulously wealthy. Cheap private number plates can be had for a few hundred pounds, as all manner of combinations of letters and numbers can be invested with personal meaning. The organisation reckons that more than £2billion has been raised at its specialised number plate auctions over the last 25 years or so, although even the DVLA valuations team can sometimes get it wrong. Number plate '250 C' was put up for auction recently by the DVLA, and the much-hyped sale was expected to attract bids in the region of £500,000. On the day though, the auction ran out of steam at a meagre £21,500 – presumably causing a few red faces in the DVLA’s publicity office.
