I found a natural alcove carved into a basalt cliff face directly behind a 12 meter wide curtain waterfall deep in a temperate rainforest. The waterfall falls as a continuous translucent sheet across the full entrance. To get inside you walk through the water. So I built a cabin in there. Three log walls. An oiled hardwood floor. A cast iron stove. A sleeping platform. A hand water pump drawing directly from the waterfall pool. Solar power from a panel mounted on the cliff face. A living moss ceiling that grew over weeks from spores I pressed into the basalt above my bed. The waterfall is the front wall. It is also the door, the window, the sound, the light source and the water supply. This is the full build from first arrival to final night sleeping behind the water. ———————————————————————— CHAPTERS: 00:00 — Finding the waterfall alcove 02:30 — First time stepping through the waterfall 05:00 — Measuring the alcove and planning the build 08:00 — Felling and preparing timber in the rainforest 14:00 — Transporting logs through the waterfall 18:00 — Cutting foundation recesses in the basalt floor 22:00 — Setting corner posts and building the base frame 27:00 — Laying the oiled hardwood floor 31:00 — Building the log walls 36:00 — Installing the roof and ceiling boards 40:00 — First fire in the cast iron stove 44:00 — Interior finishing and waterproofing 49:00 — Installing the hand water pump from the pool 52:00 — Solar panel on the cliff face 55:00 — Living moss ceiling treatment 58:00 — Carving decorative details and the signboard 01:03:00 — Exterior pathway, benches and planted fern corridor 01:08:00 — First night sleeping behind the waterfall 01:12:00 — Full interior and exterior reveal 01:18:00 — Final aerial pull-back ———————————————————————— TOOLS AND MATERIALS USED: — Felling axe and crosscut saw for timber work — Drawknife for debarking logs — Hydraulic waterproof cement for corner post foundation recesses — Stainless steel structural screws and coach screws throughout — Cordless drill driver and cordless impact driver — Waterproof timber oil applied to all hardwood surfaces — Clear flexible waterproof sealant between all log courses — Compact cast iron wood burning stove with stainless steel wall thimble — Compact solar panel with 12 volt lithium battery pack — LED strip lighting on the ceiling perimeter — Hand water pump with silicone intake tube from the waterfall pool — Food-safe beeswax for wooden utensil finishing — Buttermilk and moss spore slurry for living ceiling treatment — Wood burning tool for decorative post designs — V-gouge and flat chisel for carved wall panels and signboard ———————————————————————— Every piece of timber was felled, debarked and cut to length in the rainforest. Every log was floated across the pool and pulled through the waterfall by hand. The moss on the ceiling is alive and still growing. The water in the pump comes directly from the waterfall pool. Nothing was brought in that could not pass through the waterfall curtain. ———————————————————————— If you want to see the next build, subscribe. The next location is already chosen.
