The title track from Elton John's 1989 album "Sleeping with the Past." The liner notes to the album state: "These songs were inspired by the Soul Pioneers of the Sixties and Seventies, whose music meant so much to us. EJ and BT." The songs were written and recorded at Puk Studios in Denmark, Taupin listening to R & B music for inspiration while he wrote. Influences included Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, The Drifters, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, Stevie Wonder, Percy Sledge, and Ray Charles. MCA offered little support in promoting the album, after the lack of success of Elton's previous album "Reg Strikes Back." It was not released for almost a year, and when it was, Elton was furious (these were pre-recovery days) with MCA's handling of it. Eventually, almost two years after it was recorded, it was a #1 album in England, and a top 40 album in the U.S. The album jacket also stated, "This album's for you, Bernie." This song was particularly inspired by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles.
