When I started to learn the language, they hit me with one syllabary after another: hiragana, then katakana. But those didn't set me back much. Kanji on the other hand... I found out they're more like playing a game of charades with a really bad teammate who gives you vague hints combined with obscure sounds-like clues that are way out of date.
