Deep in the dark, dense forests of New York state hide the overgrown, crumbling ruins of a roughly century-old castle that belonged to one of the wealthiest and most successful men in America: David Abercrombie, co-founder of the famous clothing brand “Abercrombie and Fitch”. It now sits abandoned, and all but forgotten, having become the source of all kinds of dark rumors and legends, possibly due to the constant death and tragedy that always seemed to befall whoever happened to own the property at the time. The story of David Abercrombie begins in 1892, when the businessman established a high-end rugged wear and outdoor equipment emporium near Wall Street. He soon began outfitting intrepid, wealthy explorers, including the likes of Robert Peary and President Theodore Roosevelt. In 1927, Abercrombie built his own retreat, an estate on more than 300 acres he called Elda, named for the first initials of his four children. It included paths for horseback riding and hiking, a gun range, a spring-fed swimming pool, a pond for fishing, and of course, this 25-room home that resembled a majestic Scottish castle. Unfortunately, after the deaths of Abercrombie and several members of his family, the castle was sold, and eventually ended up abandoned. Today, the overgrown and crumbling remains of Elda Castle lie in ruins. The structure is still intact, but everything else has been completely hammered by vandals and so-called graffiti artists, and every single pane of glass in every window has been broken. However, it still retains some of its original grandeur and mystique. As you walk around its magnificent hallways, chambers, and stairwells, you can appreciate the craftsmanship that was involved in its construction, and its hard for your mind not to wander back in time to try to imagine what this place must have been like back in its heyday.
