Everything about it suggests it was recorded before the year 2000 – the year Tirao collapsed during a performance, an incident that left him paralyzed. Nonetheless, he recovered and returned to the stage in 2005, the same year he released the album Renacer (“Rebirth”). A longtime host of the television program Recitales Espectaculares, Tirao was so celebrated that in the ’70s and ’80s he recorded nearly an album a year. He was also a close collaborator of Astor Piazzolla, with whom he performed “Adiós Nonino” in 1981, one of the bandoneon player’s most famous works. The program for this concert could be described as “Argentina at heart”: it revisits the popular and folk traditions of his homeland, along with the great tangos of Carlos Gardel, Aníbal Troilo and other composers in a genre that never loses its power to move. Brazilian music lovers, however, will note the only non-Argentine song in the concert, “Berimbau” by Baden Powell and Vinicius de Moraes. Tirao’s interpretation is strikingly inventive: the guitar becomes a berimbau, the Afro-Brazilian bow instrument with a gourd resonator, and at times one could swear multiple players are accompanying him.
