Faint second line in pregnancy test!!

Hi everyone! This is Dr. Sredevi. Today let us clear the confusion regarding the faint second line in the urine pregnancy kit. Why does your pregnancy test have a second line which is faint positive?? 1. Testing too early in the cycle. Urine pregnancy kits detect the hormone called HCG ( Human chorionic gonadotropin) in the blood. Kits can detect only when your blood HCG levels are more than 20 MIU/ ml. So when your HCG levels are less than this value, that is when you test too early in your cycle then the second line may be faint. 2. Chemical Pregnancy- when your pregnancy test is faint positive, but it gets aborted even before the pregnancy is seen in ultrasound, then it is called Chemical pregnancy! 3. Ectopic pregnancy- when you get a faint positive second line and also if you have giddiness, and lower abdominal pain always gets a scan done to rule out ectopic pregnancy..which is Pregnancy outside the womb! 4. Ovarian cysts/ tumors secreting HCG can cause a false positive pregnancy test even when you are not pregnant! 5. Certain medications like HCG injection taken within 2 weeks of your pregnancy test can cause your pregnancy kit to turn positive.. so in that case look for serial beta HCG blood tests to confirm pregnancy. How to confirm your pregnancy? 1. Ultrasound 2. Serial Beta HCG levels can help to confirm Intra uterine normal pregnancy.
