Two inches long. One gram in weight. And the entire Antarctic ecosystem depends on them. Antarctic krill are the foundation of life in the Southern Ocean. Every animal we've explored in this series - emperor penguins, humpback whales, leopard seals, elephant seals, orcas, fur seals, Weddells, Adélies, minke whales - ALL of them depend, directly or indirectly, on krill. Without krill, Antarctica as we know it ceases to exist. These tiny crustaceans form swarms so massive they can be seen from space. A single swarm can contain BILLIONS of individuals with a combined weight of millions of tons. When they gather, they turn the water pink and create an underwater glow with their bioluminescence. Whales travel 10,000 miles specifically to feed on them. A single blue whale can consume 6 tons of krill per day - that's millions of individual krill filtered from the water. But here's what makes them truly remarkable: they're not just numerous, they're adaptable. They can shrink their bodies during winter when food is scarce - an ability almost no other animal possesses. They feed on ice algae when phytoplankton disappears. They glow in the dark. Their eggs sink thousands of feet to the ocean floor, then the larvae swim back up to the surface - a vertical journey spanning half a mile. Yet despite their abundance, krill face an existential threat. In some regions, their populations have declined by 70-80% since the 1970s. Climate change is reducing the sea ice they depend on for winter survival. Without ice, krill larvae don't survive. Without krill, the predators starve. This is the story of the most important animal you've probably never thought about - the tiny creature holding together the world's most productive marine ecosystem. 🦐 What You'll Learn: Why EVERY Antarctic animal depends on krill How they form swarms visible from space with billions of individuals Their remarkable ability to shrink when food is scarce Why they glow in the dark (bioluminescence) The epic journey of krill larvae - sinking then swimming half a mile How climate change threatens their survival and the entire ecosystem Why a single blue whale needs 6 tons of krill daily The connection between sea ice and krill populations How their decline could collapse the Antarctic ecosystem Perfect for anyone fascinated by ocean ecosystems, the foundation of food webs, or understanding how tiny creatures support giant predators. #AntarcticKrill #Krill #Antarctica #MarineEcosystem #FoodWeb #AntarcticWildlife #ClimateChange #oceanlife 💙 We've explored 10 Antarctic animals in this series - which has been YOUR favorite?
