The answer is equally yes there are more challenges in academia then there ever were, in particular to find a tenure-track position. At the same time the prospects for talented, smart individuals with education have never looked better. We simply have to be more practical and view all possibilities as opportunities that we can pursue. Instead of nearly defining our jobs, and what they look like within a narrow classification scheme, we have to be a lot more entrepreneurial and be OK with finding the right position for ourselves. This might even involve creating a position and making your world up as you go. Go be practical, and be freaking awesome. Stop looking at macro trends and start thinking about the opportunities that are right at your fingertips.
